The help MAIN provides is determined by the help you need. If MAIN can’t help you directly, we will connect you with the resources you need and advocate on your behalf. MAIN specializes in providing healthcare outreach, chronic disease and preventative health education and “Obamacare” enrollment.

What is the ACA?

The Affordable Care Act, also called ObamaCare, is a health care reform law signed in 2010 by President Barack Obama. Important provisions include a mandate for most Americans to have insurance by 2014 and the opening of health insurance marketplaces for subsidized insurance.

The Affordable Care Act increases the quality, accessibility and affordability of health insurance. The law eliminates pre-existing conditions, prevents insurance companies from not providing you health care coverage when you are sick, protects against gender discrimination, and expands free preventative services and health benefits. It is designed to expand Medicaid and CHIP and to improve Medicare. The law requires larger employers to insure their employees. It creates a marketplace for government subsidized insurance, which will assist millions of individuals, families and small businesses with more affordable health insurance.

What is MAIN’s role in health care access?

MAIN’s Community Health Workers help immigrants and refugees learn about the Affordable Care Act and assist them with their health insurance enrollment. Our Community Health Workers meet with community members individually and in groups to provide education and awareness of the new health care law and the importance of preventative health care for individuals and families in our community.

In building this culture of health awareness, our Community Health Workers provide advocacy and support in coordinating referrals to health care and community services. Our case management services are ongoing; if the need exists, MAIN will be there to help.

MAIN’s Community Health Workers can help YOU!

Health Guidance: If you don’t have health insurance, our Community Health Workers will help you find the right health care coverage plan and assist you in completing the application process to enroll in the Marketplace.

Once you are enrolled, a Community Health Worker can assist you in understanding which services are covered under your plan as well as the costs (premiums, co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance) associated with your plan. Our Community Health Workers will also help you understand when to use emergency care or primary care.
